Comfortable Enough To Sleep In

I so love this maxi. And my obsession with the entire spectrum of yellow and orange doesn't seem to be letting up so I'm allowing myself to fully marinate and experiment with all the citrusy, fiery, sunsety golden colors I can find.

Last Fall, this marigold maxi dress started it all. It was inspired by the vibrance of the season and the joyfulness of Thanksgiving dinner festivities. Anyway, I find I wear it more indoors than outside nowadays. Especially for lounging. With a crisp beverage of some sort... yes, no we're getting somewhere.

The thing is, I usually only wear clothing that's comfy enough to fall asleep in. My daily work is so physical and rarely sedentary so lounging is everything to me and my wardrobe must fit the lifestyle. For both work and leisure.

This dress has certainly turned into lounging leisure wear. And I'm okay with that because it's gorgeous and wearing it makes my laziness look regal and luxe. A dress that makes you look like a butterfly even when you feel like a slug. I'll take it!

Updo

My hair has grown to an odd length and the last time I had it cut into a style professionally was well over a year. Still, instead of getting it cut, I tried out this updo the other day.

Maybe I've been watching too much daytime television at the gym or maybe the 90s really did have some classic looks - but whatever inspired me, I thoroughly enjoyed bringing it back with this curly twist up.

Anyway, it was all in celebration of my newest piece in The Tiny Closet Shop: The Shopper. I've never worn this color before. In fact, I pretty much never wear pastels... but this aqua blue drapey feel was too fun to pass up - aaaand it's perfect for Springtime expressions. I'll be wearing it with some white sneaks, flat sandals, and clickety heels, a great addition to my Spring Capsule.

I'm on the road to pampering myself again, wearing lipstick, doin' up my hair and getting a bit more creative with my daily wardrobe. Come on over to The Shop to get this fresh Spring arrival for yourself and see what you can do with such a versatile piece!

An Atypical Basic

Last week I debuted this fun, fitted LBD in my shop. I don't really wear fitted clothing, mainly for comfort (mentally and physically) - and you better believe I'm wearing spanx under this cozy thing, for smooth lines and whatnot. But I thought it would be nice to show it off. In fact, these photos mark the first time wearing this dress. And it's my own design! Go figure...

But just because I don't wear fitted clothing doesn't mean I can't design it for those who do. In fact, I designed it for a couple of my curvier girlfriends that like a bit of cinch in the waistline. Voila :)

But I actually felt pretty chic and sexy in it. Ha! And even though I had nowhere to go at the time, I had fun strutting up and down in this original LBD.

This is a simple, comfortable chic black dress that is fitting for a plethora of occasions. And that's why I decided to introduce it now for Fall. Because even as early as the first days of November, Theo and I are already getting invited to parties, get togethers and upcoming holiday festivities. A gal needs options! So I felt this dress could be an answer to a lot of questions of what to wear, what to wear... Dinners, dates, holiday parties, office holiday parties, cocktails, girls night. This dress might just be my atypical, go-to basic for the season.

Evening Statements

As I mentioned earlier, I've been putting more effort into accessorizing. I'm a simple gal and I get claustrophobic even wearing more than 3 things on my body at a time, so jewelry has always been a frustrating afterthought. But I love it so much! It shouldn't be hard, it should be fun expression.

I've been focusing on expressing myself more through accessories and I've found that I prefer statement pieces. Just one item of jewelry will do to satisfy my desires to accessorize while also maintaining my comfort levels in froufrou.

When Happiness Boutique, an online jewelry boutique, contacted me about their new jewelry items for the season, I was pretty impressed with the amount of options they had. And they even had a fabulous category dedicated specifically to Statement Necklaces (!!) Of course I had to take a peek.

This black Vogue pattern I whipped up last Spring was made for this necklace! I mean the duo couldn't be any more perfect. I put this simple outfit together for an early evening out. Minimal, chic black linen with a romance-y, femmy necklace.

East Meets West

I was hurrying to meet my friend for drinks one evening while in the Garment District on a fabric run and I came across this Indian unisex tunic. I have no idea why I picked it up, it wasn't my typical style wheelhouse at all. But I was so drawn to it that, just like that, I bought it, raced home, put it on over my leggings and headed out. And that's definitely not like me at all, to just buy something and add it half-mindedly to my very particular Tiny Closet.

But something seemed special about it and I've had it ever since.

I originally wore it as a statement piece with the other parts of my outfit subdued and spotlighting the tunic. But on our way to the beach last week, it was a little chilly and I grabbed the tunic to wear over my cutoffs. What an awesome juxtaposition! It turned out looking so fun and unassuming. A pleasant change to the usual West Coast tee and cutoffs. An East meets West sort of deal. So much better than how I was traditionally wearing it before.

So even though this piece is made for much less rugged outings, it's so roomy and light that I like to wear it on long walks or hikes, to the beach or just with a pair of worn jeans. Just a kick-around top. Only, nicer to look at.

Night & Day: A Romper Story

I rarely wear all black on a sunny day but I'll happily whip out this all-black drama-boheme romper as the sun goes down. I've had this lil mama in my Tiny Closet for almost a year and I can't believe I haven't shared it on the blog until now.

Back in early Fall of last year, I was growing a bit frustrated with my wardrobe's lack of girly romance. Mainly thinking of Theo. It was a bit of a dressing-for-husband situation. I wanted to feel a bit more dressy and romantic during our early evening outings - even if it was just for happy hour. I also was on the hunt for a fabulous romper.

Well, the hunt was certainly a success. I didn't end up making one, I found it at a Flea Market. And from sunset to twilight, I love the ornate bell sleeves and Theo loves the high short and low neckline.

And probably my attitude when I prance around in it.

Black and gold is my go-to duo for early evening wear. And because I always need a bit of edge and androgyny, I paired these Western sharp-toed booties to balance out the femmy upper.

I've never shown this piece until now but actually, this is the one thing I love to pull on and go to make our daily casual outings a bit more romancier. Just my way, my little reminder to Theo that night and day, he is the one.

The Effortless Closet

Just about a week ago, I introduced this harem jumpsuit.

For me, I want to keep it simple, I want to be comfortable, and I want to make a statement. You know this already.

But, did I mention I also want to throw it on and go?

I did? Well just hear me out.

Basically, I want to look good effortlessly. And who doesn't??

I've never found myself wanting to rifle through my closet searching laboriously for something to wear. We all already know how that can quickly turn into agony. But still, it has happened. And I realized if you don't know within a minute what your wardrobe can offer you to wear that day, you may need to rethink how you're building it.

It has almost been a year since I commenced re-imagining my closet, focusing mainly on making more intuitive choices. Because that's what The Tiny Closet is really about, not just a curation of personal tastes but also of intuitive choices. And since I make clothing as well, designing more intuitively. For those of us who want to throw something on and go, and feel fabulous doing it, that "something" has got to be something, ya know? And for that to happen within a minute, your Tiny Closet has got to be built for it.

I have been rebuilding mine.

Many of you were curious about what this jumpsuit looked like standing up, since my earlier post only showed me sitting in it. Well, voila!

This jumpsuit, my cropped tees, my maxi dresses are the first new items to be added carefully to my Tiny Closet. Made to slip right in to my hands and thrown on for the day, the evening, the weekend, whatever.

Because I like looking good without trying. I planned it that way.

A Work In Progress...

I have wanted a closet of jumpsuits for years. Years! Just think, one piece that you can put on and go. !! No top-to-bottom coordination to consume your thoughts in the morning, and it's better than a dress because you can sit however you like without anyone gasping.

But, well, finding the right one/s is surprisingly very difficult. The cheap ones are way too sexy, the good ones are too expensive ($450 for a floral jumpsuit, really?) and the vintage ones are way too small in the waist and derrière. After too many humbling experiences trying these things on, I just stopped looking after a while.

So I decided to take on the challenge myself of creating the jumpsuit I never had. And if I can design one successfully, surely there's more styles I can come up with, yes? Surely!

With my first design, I started easy. A harem jumpsuit to wear around the house, to pop on for errands and appointments and with some heels, maybe dinner and a movie? Who knows, we'll see where the day takes us.

It's no secret, I am a woman who loves leisure and loads of comfy me-time. Even when I'm working. And like, I can't do that if I'm like uncomfortable, you know?

This jumpsuit is the solution. To those times I don't want to think about pairing pants with the one shirt that's not in the laundry (but I don't wanna wear that shirt!), or those times I want to wear a single statement and an overcoat - this harem jumpsuit is exactly what I need it to be: a beautiful, simple, easy alternative.

Ah, blissful. But what do you think??

Wait, hold that thought, I almost forgot...

Some of you already know I design and sew clothing. In fact, a lot of the clothes you see on this blog are pieces I've designed and made. I started about 5 years ago, sewing clothing for myself - just copying designs that I would see in department stores but couldn't afford. Then I began sewing for my friends. And then my friend's friends, co-workers, even random people who would come up to me asking me where I got my outfit.

I've never officially commented on creating a clothing line but it's gotten to the point where I've been asked so many times throughout the last few years, "When are you going to sell your clothes????", that I'll come clean:

I don't know.

But more importantly...

Nothing would make me happier, selling my clothing to you all. The Tiny Closet is indeed a lifestyle. It's about simplicity, function, purpose, ease and total comfort. In your home, your work, your life and of course, your closet. How that looks in the form of apparel? I'm still working on that concept for myself.

It's a work in progress and I'm almost there. So!

Art & Drama by Day

I needed a break from my designs recently and I love playing with store patterns so I made myself this cool dress. For those of you who sew, I used Vogue 1482 (V1482). It was super simple and fun to follow - just took a couple hours. I

made a couple changes too, mainly turning the neckline into a deep plunging V. The v-neck took a much more modest artsy/work attire look to an artsy/happy hour look. It's loungy, it's sexy and it's a bit dressy. More interestingly to me though, is it's a bit different with its shape and diagonal pocket.

The boots were a good answer for this particular dress. I also wore them in a more Wintry ensemble here. I'm excited to try this dress though with a pair of strappy sandals. Ooo, and a body chain.

So, if you sew, give this pattern a try. I had a lot of fun with it and was able to put it on and go. My favoritest thing to do!

Comfy Sexy Cool

I remember reading in Cosmo magazine years ago the one body part that women most love on themselves is their legs. In fact, according to the poll taken, legs won by a landslide. Interesting... with all the insane amount of nitpicking over breasts, stomach, legs, butt, etc - apparently, we all seem to be in agreement that it's hands down, legs.

I was reminded of this the other day when experimenting with the idea of a sexy muumuu design. A friend and I were chatting that no matter what dress size we are, our legs don't stop! And maybe it's because I live in L.A. but it certainly does seem like women love to show their legs. I mean I definitely do.

Yeah, actually I think it's definitely the fact that I live in L.A... I mean it's November for God's sake.

Every year, Theo and I host a "Friendsgiving" at our place. With each year though, our table get's bigger and bigger so I'm utilizing my obsession with Pinterest to plan a cool table arrangement. Thought I'd show some pics of me playing around with some floral and textile ideas.

But mainly, I just love wearing this new Tiny Closet design. The drape and double slits are excellent in movement but also pretty flattering when sitting. Like sitting for dinner. A new favorite piece!

I mean, I never want to take it off. This thing is so roomy and regal and sexy and... And who wants to where something tight on Thanksgiving?! You can have it. This Thursday, I'll be stuffing myself with stuffing and relaxing under this navy blue tent.

But you know I'll be showing the legs though :)
