The Colors of Fall

This month so far in Southern Cal has been hotter than all of Summer.  I definitely wasn't expecting a daily 100 degrees for the start of Fall when I planned this fitted turtleneck and floor length skirt duo. It's laughable to think of wearing right now.  I know it never really gets that cold here - still, this simple Fall ensemble was planned to be worn for relatively cool mornings on the Vespa, zipping around town to get coffee and a brisk stylish walk in the park.

Perhaps October will be more welcoming of my plans.

These two items (top and skirt) have replaced two older items from my [still] Tiny Closet that have since been donated.  About a year ago, I realized I'm very happy with the quantity (and quality) of clothing and accessories that I own.  I don't need anything more.

Does that mean I will never shop again?
No.  No it certainly doesn't.  Could you imagine?

It means, I've got all the options I need to keep me happy and creative throughout the year.  And when I see something I can't live without, I only purchase it if I can find an item in my closet that I can live without - and I simply replace it with the new.

So even though I love to shop, I also know that it's easy for a fashion lover like myself to be perhaps too indulgent at times.  So this "system" I created for myself keeps me from dealing with a closet full of junk later.

Replacing and not adding makes me enjoy my clothes more...

and helps maintain my focus on the important stuff: being creative with personal style.

Yellow sunsets, brilliant jewel toned flowers, darkened fallen leaves - if only there was a nip in the air, this Fall would be perfect.

As you may be picking up already on my posting trend, with the relaunch of The Tiny Closet, you can look forward to reading and perusing a new post every Monday!  Additionally, I'll be sharing various products I've tried, believe in and love.  So keep your eyes peeled for those special posts as well.

Hope you enjoyed this new Monday post and I'll see ya back here next week for more!

Beach Surf to Rooftop Turf

SURF

Last year, I decided to indulge in the creative, resort side of swimwear.  This year, the theme has been all.about.comfort.  In more ways than one.  I want to be comfortable in my clothes enough to forget about them and enjoy my life.  Especially when I'm at the beach.

All In The Skirt

For Theo's 30th birthday, I was shopping for days to try and find the best outfit to bring him into the new decade.

I'm not used to shopping as incessantly as I found myself doing that week.  My need to find the "perfect" outfit drove me practically insane but it was a rare moment in my life where I was not going to stand for anything I already had in my Tiny Closet.  It had to be something brand spanking new.

My search all came to halting stop however, when I came across this glorious skirt at The wasteland, my all time favorite thrift shop on Melrose Ave.  I can't say it was a magical happenstance as I walked into that store with full intent to see every single piece of clothing before I left, so finding the skirt was as inevitable as it was so phenomenal!!

Latest Evening Wear

The best part about Summer is the long evenings.  The sun sets for hours and hours, making everything so sultry and relaxing!
And whenever I think of sultry and relaxing, one word comes to mind for clothing options:

minimal!
Simply two pieces will do.  Thank you.

Something Borrowed: Enhance Your Closet!

borrowed this tailored jacket from a friend.  Borrowing and swapping clothing with friends is definitely a Tiny Closet do.

As someone who loves clothing and experimenting with styles, I definitely don't deny my desire for shiny new pieces every season but since I realized a while ago that my neediness is actually a passing fancy and not worth permanently buying new clothes every month, I like indulging in it temporarily.  By borrowing cute, stylish pieces when I can from my cute, stylish friends.  And husband :)

jacket: Mine / top: Pink (altered) / jeans: American Apparel / shoes: CMG

And this mens button up shirt was given to me by my stylish roommate.  For a year I wore it in its original full length but a couple days ago, I decided to crop it and chop off the arms for a fresh new look with my high waisted jeans.  This will be perfect for Spring and Summer so I plan to make more!

Always marinating in simplicity, I've really settled into a minimum frills look.  So every now and then I like to add a bit of influence from a friend to enhance my style.  And when I have a hard time giving it back, that's when I know I have to get one for myself.  I think of it as a shopping screener :)

Hope you're enjoying your Monday!

A Top Not Like The Others

I've been a crafting/sewing/creating fool lately.  February has overdosed me with ideas and inspiration.  One of the many little items I've put together recently is this open-sided long sleeve tee:

It was actually a bit by accident.  During the fitting, I realized it looked kinda cool without the sides sewn up.  So I left it as is.  It's cute, yes?

tee: Tiny Closet Collection / jeans: American Apparel / wedges: Santee Alley

Instead of a bra, I went with a simple white bandeau since the sides are completely open.  I put on my high waist jeans and some wedges and was off.  A minimal outfit that is just outside of "basic".  So for the warmer weather days, this is a creative alternative to jeans and tee.

High-Waist Denim: A Casual Elegance

Donned in American classics, I spent some time at my local Flower Mart over the weekend in search of a few new bouquets

Choices, choices, choices...  3 city blocks of wholesale flowers and plants.  I was there all morning trying to decide.

At least getting dressed was a cinch.

To beat the morning chill, I threw on my soft, thick fur vest.  One of the most worn pieces I've ever sewn.
I chose a pale blue oxford shirt tucked tightly into a fun new pair of high-waist denim.

I thought it would be fitting to have a classic half-up-do hairstyle to coordinate with my high neckline and casual, western but feminine ensemble.

shirt: Zara Man / jeans: American Apparel / belt: Zara Man / heels: Forever21 / vest: Tiny Closet Collection

I love borrowing Theo's cognac hued croc leather belt.  It's regal and classic.  Perfect for high-waist bottoms of any kind.
And with these new jeans, I swooned over the combo in both texture and color!
I longed for some short cowboy booties but that would've been overkill.  To keep the style fluid but unexpected,
I decided to top off the look with tan leather cage sandals.  One of my faves.

After all that contemplating, I ended up with two cute little plants.  A succulent and some mini cactuses.  They will look adorable on our nightstands!

I am so enjoying my new high-waist jeans.  There's a strong sense of rugged class and elegance to this type of fit
Looking in the mirror and seeing a nicer shape and longer legs, I'm like, 'Hey girl'.

Enjoy your weekend!
psst - new post on Monday so y'all come back now :)

Lunching, Musing, Lounging

And not necessarily in that order...

Grabbing lunch at Parish, a favorite restaurant of ours,  I decided to wear Theo's cardigan (that I bought him a few days ago), a pull-up cotton pencil skirt, and brogues.  Since deep v-necks work for my neckline, I decided to skip wearing a shirt and show off a bit of bra lace instead.

I was feeling so musey and loungy.  Sharing a good meal with a loved one tends to really fuel my creative flow - plus, the outfit I was wearing made me feel like a character in a Woody Allen movie, raw and effortless with a hint of modern, metropolitan sophistication.
