Wearing Fishnet

Yesterday, Theo and I had lunch at Guild.  After passing by it on Target runs and trips to the movies, we finally decided to go inside.  I decided to give my new fishnet tee-dress another go,
after wearing it Monday but failing to take photos in it.

Since I have never worn fishnet beyond my legs, I thought I'd ease into the style and wear it with brogues first and dress it down for midday.  This is a different type of fishnet apparel though with it's tee-shirt like design and wool crocheted netting.  It's actually warm!  And very soft.  It also has a surprising drape to it, which comes off looking elegant or just casual.  Depending on what shoes you wear :)

Dressing outside my comfort zone always turns out to be the most fun because that's when I really learn about my capacity for style.  No matter what your views are about different types of clothing, clothing has no definitive style until it's on you.  Once you put it on, it's your own interpretation.  It's your style.  And you can make it look any way you want, be it a fishnet dress, silk gown or a leather jacket.

After trying on this dress (at one of my favorite boutiques, Cinema), I saw it being a lot of fun for the remainder of Summer and also lots of potential for Fall and Winter because of it's versatility.  Very excited to try out my ideas.

Guild turned out to be amazing.  Either we have great taste in trying out new restaurants or the restaurants in downtown L.A. are just fabulous in general.  Theo and I are total foodies and so far, every restaurant in our neighborhood is on point.  We're so spoiled!

I must admit, with my irregular schedule and no two days ever being the same, I've been struggling to post as regularly as I'd like...  It's funny, the zen outlook I have with clothing really should be put to use on the rest of my life.  Like I say, my Tiny Closet is about ignoring all the rules, doing you and keeping it simple.  So instead of trying to set rules for my ever-changing schedule, I'm going to try, well, not doing that.  And post when I can and when I'm wearing something I can't help but show and talk about - which should be a few times a week at least, but on no particular day.

So I hope you check back with me often and keep up to date with my never ending new stylings and ensembles!
I absolutely love sharing :)

Layering Handsomely

Exploring our new hood on a walk on Sunday, I didn't feel like wearing my usual jacket or sweater or blazer or or or...  So many options that I've worked to death it seems, and I was completely uninterested in all of them.  I try my hardest not to let that negative feeling of the there's-nothing-in-my-closet syndrome get to me, but when I open my Tiny Closet and it comes over me, it's the worst.  Talk about closet interruptus.  heehee!

Thank goodness my attention has recently landed to rest for a moment on men's fashion!  Otherwise, I don't know how long it would have taken me to leave the house that morning, omg.  Drama drama, right?  Anyway, the things boys have been doing with clothing and textures lately is pretty inspiring and snapped me right out of my funk.  I was inspired in fact, to try out a bit of their handsome styling tricks myself by taking something I've been seeing a lot in the boy mags:

layering a denim jacket with a tweed blazer.  Handsome!
And as it turned out, I just so happened to have those same ingredients in my Tiny Closet to brew up the very same look for myself :)
The key is all in the tailoring.  Men are wearing such fitted clothing these days and I'm loving it.  Loving it for myself as well.

My cropped, fitted denim jacket is just tight enough to be layered underneath my conservative fit all-season tweed blazer.  If these items were any bigger or more loose, the styling effect wouldn't have worked.

I also wore Theo's socks 80s aerobic style, bunched over my skinny denims.  And of course, my favorite Bass brogues were right as rain for the look.  I love these girls!  The suede bow ties make the shoe and never get old.

Looking forward to the sun this week so I can use my pool!!  Okay okay, all you Californians go ahead, roll your eyes and chuckle at my enthusiasm, I don't care!  Just because every single apartment/condo/complex in L.A. has a pool or two doesn't make it any less amazing to this Seattleite.

I might as well be J.Lo right now, y'all.  Hahaaa!  Hope you have a wonderful week!

Casual... with Knife Pleats

The other day, I decided to go hi-lo.  Mixing a fine crepe-like silk shell with meticulous knife pleating with a pair of regular ol' denim cutoffs by Paper Denim.  The alternate definition of high/low I guess :)  I have always worn this shell with my business outfits but thought it would be more refreshing with something ultimately casual.

What could be more casual than cutoffs??
I've been wearing glasses and hair scarves for the past several days - I can't stop!  I'm in the zone with this look, people.  And it all came about organically actually: I didn't feel like wearing concealer but I still felt my under eye area needed to be concealed in some way so I found some old vintage glasses.  The glasses in this post I found in the Philippines - $2, not vintage.  These other glasses here are vintage.  With the hair scarf, well my hair has now entered the "terrible grow-out" stage and... something needed to be done.

And just like that, it's Fall...

Every year around this time, before the leaves begin to really change and after the sunsets become noticeably earlier,  I go through a couple weeks of awkwardness; matching my ensembles to the changing temperature.  Should I wear a cardigan?  A light sweater?  A jacket?  Too warm, too cold...  This year though, I'm prepared.

Keep visiting to see my new "Apres Summer" cover ups!

The Boyfriend Look

And I'm talking about the "boyfriend" look, not the androgynes, collegiate hybrid that follows close behind.

For years, I've been on the sidelines watching the "boyfriend" trend countlessly re-emerge into the spotlight and show its sexy self - and each time, with a small update in lines, color or styling.  As it's made it's way down the runway at least once a year in it's usual suspects: oversize cardi, loose rolled denim and a pair of scuffed brogues, why would I not want to try that?  A girl in boy's clothing is just so damn attractive.  But then in the privacy of my home, trying out those sexy masculine lines for myself, the I-stole-this-from-my-boyfriend-isn't-it-cute look doesn't tend to translate attractively on this lil frame of mine.  Humph!

Buuut as I was browsing through the AllSaints website the other day thinking my thoughts and daydreaming of dressing my unborn child in AllSaints Kids, I realized, just because menswear lines don't do my body good doesn't mean I can't replicate the "boy" look using my own pieces built for tiny girls from my Tiny Closet!

And so I did.

Okay, so I cheated a little and did actually end up borrowing Theo's jeans...and his tie.  But I made this boy look fit for the girls!

By the way, the leather jacket in this spread I purchased with the generous gift certificate I won from Beso.com.  I got this sumptuous item from Yoox.com during their Winter sale and love love LOVE it.  The graphite color goes with everything, it's tailored beautifully and the zipper additions give it the grit and edge I like in the "urban, leather jacket" look.

And if you think the jacket is where it ended, we've only just begun.  Keep visiting for more items I got for free from Yoox!

So did I pull it off?  Are you feeling my boyish charm?
Don't forget to leave a comment!
