Earth Tone

I've been experimenting a lot in the studio lately with earth tones.  I have never cared for them.  I think there was one time I divulged and that was because I was living in Seattle at the time and Washington is such a green, deeply forested and "earthy" place, I thought, what the heck. I actually really liked the look I came up with - but browns, forest greens,  dark burgundies - not at all my colors...

But perhaps that's why I love the tropics and the southwest so much!  Those earth tones?  Forget about it.  That's my color family.  Maybe you've come across the same issue?  One of my friends comes alive in the Spring - she is the queen of light airy pastels, while another friend of mine cannot wear black at all but does incredibly well in browns.  Interesting!
I am extremely sensitive when it comes to wearing solid colors.  With prints, less so but with a solid color - it's got to be doing something for me - it can't just be there because I like the color.  I love a lot of colors but I practically don't wear any because of my pickiness.

So, I've been designing and working with the "other" palettes of earth tones: clay, sand, dark muted teal, cool burgundies, rust...  Ladies, I'm having a blast.
Anyway, this a lighter clay color I came across while shopping through dyes.  It's very salmon-like but in person you can definitely see more orange and browns.
I stepped outside this morning to snap a few shots of my new endeavors.  Guys, my closet is so small now!!  I don't really know what to wear on the blog anymore without making you roll your eyes from the repetitiveness of it all.  But that right there is a discussion worth having.

Now that my closet is under 20 pieces, let's talk about it!  What it means for everyday life, inspiration, motivation, and love for fashion.  Keep visiting for more on all of this very soon!

  1. I imagine it would be challenging as a fashion/style blogger to work with 20 pieces, but you always manage to mix things up nicely to make them look different. I would never know until you do your side-by-side comparisons. My personal goal is to get down to about 30 pieces because I wear the same ol stuff anyway. I just need to build my accessories collections to keep everything fresh. I love your neutral palette, by the way. A splash of color every now and then never hurts...

    1. Very true about the accessories collection. Having a decent array of shoes and accessories sets up a small wardrobe for major longevity. Thank you for the compliments! It encourages me to dig even deeper into my creative endeavors in minimalism!

  2. 20 garments or less: works for me. I like Tiny.

Here's my issue with browns. I would love to find browns that look more nude on brown skin. It's hard to find the right brown that's nude for us. This is why I got excited when I found some lingerie for our colors. But I wish that these lingerie colors could be reflected in fashion.
What do you think? Here's the link to nubianskin company, check out the lingerie colors: With shades like this I think I'd wear more brown. It seems the fashion companies(including shoes too) think "nude" is primarily for lighter skin tones.

    1. I love Nubian Skin! Yeah there definitely isn't much access to the plethora of gorgeous browns and tans that exist. I am currently working to incorporate those colors into my wardrobe and line as I believe all skin tones are missing out on a wheel of color options in the "nude" family. It's hilarious how little there is to choose from. Good call, Sandy!

  3. I got into blush (light pink) a few years ago and have been turned on to the light side. I still love cobalt, most shades of purple and some darker hues but I'm getting away from the dark browns, burgundys and what I call "autumn orange." The wearability of those colors through the year is minimal and I like to have more options through the seasons. I have a shirt with a similar color as this post and love it. It's nice to have something a bit more cheery that I can even sneak into my winter wardrobe.

Love the links to your older posts. The nostalgia!

    1. Absolutely, Chevanne - I like dusty lighter colors for Fall and Winter as well. Especially if there is a lot of sun year-round in your area, why go all dark when you don't want to or have to? Those are all rules, I say. And you don't have to abide by them. I am continuing my adventure in lighter, wispy earth tones and they go so well with Winter because of the white and cool undertones!

  4. Glad you're enjoying working with earth tones! Those are my colors, as I'm a strawberry blond/redhead. 20 pieces would have sounded small to me til I realized that's about what I actually wear. And that it's ok if I don't have the typical wardrobe basics such as LBD. It's interesting to see how different every woman's closet basics can be!

    1. Exactly right! It's totally ok to not have any of the so-called "staples" that you always read about. It's inspiring to see a woman's closet that is created authentically. It becomes truly a one of a kind curation of personal style. And actually, I feel like most women really only wear about 20-30 pieces a year. They just don't know it. And we all like options. Ah, redheads get all the fun! You have so many tones to play with!

  5. I tend towards the cool tones, lots of blue. Gray is my black and in general I don't wear brown, unless it is taupe or a deep gray-brown, but it would be interesting to see what you come up with. I'm sure, no matter the color, it will look stylish.
