Camille Rose Naturals & My First Video!

Sooooo, I've been blogging about my minimal style and lifestyle for a few years now and though my tastes have evolved and my life has changed, one thing that has remained the same is my persistence and determination in growing and keeping my natural curls.

And also...

answering tons and tons of questions on just how I grow and keep my natural curls.  Whew!  What a community I've become a part of.  So many amazing, encouraging, inspiring videos.  So many women walking the same path as mine.  And doin' it well!

I've been asked to make videos in the past, specifically of my haircare and styling routine, which I've shied away from simply because there were already so many great videos of how to do my kind of hair out there already.  But when Camille Rose Naturals asked me to try a few of her styling products, I fell in love with the results and knew I had to show the rest of you just how fabulously it handles my extremely curly hair.

I also noticed for the first time, there aren't too many wash and go tutorials for 4c shoulder length hair.  And since wash and gos are really the only style I've been able to hold down for the past 5 years,  I think I might be sort of an expert at this point :)

What is probably the hardest style to achieve for gals with hair like mine, I've gotten it down to a science.  And I can tell you, it's 20% method and 80% product.  A great method with a poor product can only get you so far and it'll be just short of getting it perfect.  Especially, if you want the style to last.  And don't we all?

I have to brag, my method is the best (heehee, but it is though!) but using these styling products with my method was what made me finally agree to do a video.  This video is sponsored by Camille Rose Naturals but the content is my own opinions and experience. And my experience was my hair went from great to frickin fabulous.  At the end of the day, I really just want to impress myself.  I mean, we're our biggest critics, you know?  So being able to fully support a line I love, I was thankful to also be sponsored by this indie brand.

A little more info about the products that I use in the video:

The 1st step is:

Camille Rose Moisture Milk
This product locks in the natural oils of my hair, as well as the water and moisture on my hair from my shower and conditioner.   When my hair dries, it's still extremely soft, manageable and full of movement.  No stiff, bushy, dryness here!

The next is:

Camille Rose Curl Maker
This gel-like product coats the Moisture Milk perfectly, sealing in the product and then instantly defining each and every curl on my head.  No frizz, just curl!  The shine is amazing and the product does act like a styler as it keeps the curls in place but still allowing plenty of movement and manageability.

The two things a curly girl needs is moisture and definition and these two products have you covered.  Completely.

So if you want to see how my fluffy soft class 4 curls literally transformed into defined, shiny corkscrew goodness watch my video!  And pssst, it's a tutorial (yay!) - so when you're done watching, you can go try it on yourself!

Check out the Camille Rose Naturals lines.  You can buy her products at Target, Whole Foods and online at www.camillerosenaturals.com

Oh and don't forget to tell me how it works :)

  2. I've been natural since 07 and i stopped doing tons of wash and go's around 2010, but I love this method!!! I can't wait to try it when it warms up a bit! I love camille rose products. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Wowza!! Over 7 years of au naturalness...You're my hero! I stopped doing wash and go's too, thinking they just weren't healthy to do every single day. But that was until I created this method and also found some really good products for that particular style. Now I don't worry too much about sporting this style daily. I dunno though when it starts getting long. That's new territory!

  3. I love that your making videos now! I love the camille rose naturals almond jai twisting butter. I love wash and go's but I hate how long my hair takes to dry with them.

  6. You did a great job on your first video! You are beautiful. I'm glad to see an actual wash and go...typically this style requires a lot more styling. I recently chopped my hair again, but I'm looking forward to trying your method once it grows out a bit. Thanks again!

    1. Ooo, chopped your hair? I'm jealous, I remember the blissful days of my twa... I forgot to mention this in the video but this style is perfect for TWAs! The shorter the hair, the better the turnout. You should still try it! I'm so glad you enjoyed my tutorial, thank you for watching!

  11. Natalie, this video is absolutely amazing (BOOKMARKED) and informative! I am a TRESSDRESSER of 15 years now specializing in locks and natural hair. As you've stated in the video, natural hair is a HUGE community and growing by the millisecond like technology! Therefore, I THANK YOU for introducing this product in which I will try and introduce to my clientele as well as share the video. Might I add that finally hearing your TINY voice matches you so well! THANK YOU again for being an amazing naturally beautiful woman.

  12. I'm dying right now because the video was amazing. The quality is far above the average natural hair tutorial and isn't weighed down with a long run of steps. This is perhaps one of the only true wash and go videos I've seen. No fuss, simple instructions and attainable results. Excellent work. Most of all, thank you for filming you shots in one take instead of pasting it together. Heavens. Makes a load of difference. I am really looking forward to more videos. You're the best!

  14. What a wonderful tutorial! My curly fine hair is more a 3a Botticelli type so I don't focus on stretching them out. I'm always looking for natural products that give good results. I'll have to try this and tweak the method to suit. Any suggestions?

    1. Hi Sue! Your hair sounds gorgeous - love botticelli curls! So for curls that don't need to be stretched, do all the same things in my video EXCEPT instead of pulling the curls down, crunch the curls up while still upside down. Squeeze the curls towards you rather than stretching them away and scrunch them back up to your scalp. Then, instead of wrapping the hair into the towel, pin your hair loosely on top of your head and then wrap a towel around your head. This keeps the curls from being stretched but still dries them. Don't use a t-shirt. Your curls hold more water longer so you WILL need a thicker towel. Also, looser curls have a tendency to be quite flat at the top of the head and if you like more height at the top, I would put a little gel on your roots just on the very top of your head so that your roots stay lifted. When blowdrying, just continue to scrunch the curls up so that they dry in their most botticelli state :). Hope this was helpful. Have fun!

  15. Wonderful tutorial. I have combination curls- some are wavy others are tighter, either way, the hair is happiest when moisturized. I actually dry my hair upside down with a diffuser for greater lift but love your tips for product and towel use. And, and, and, I LOVE your site. Recently discovered via "Already Pretty," and have been so pleased. You have a fabulous sense of style and that tiny closet of yours gives lots of bang for the buck.
Keep those videos coming...you are a natural in front of the camera.

  17. As a product junkie, I have both the moisture milk and the curl maker in my stash :) For some strange reason after use of the products, I am left with flakes. I want to like these products so badly. My favorite bloggers love the stuff and now you. I have been admiring your blog and hair for months. I've used the newest formulation of the curl maker that everybody has been raving about. Maybe I too heavy handed with the curl maker :( I want to like these products so badly

    1. Hi lv! Thank you for following my blog! You know, it's hard when everyone seems to be enjoying a product that for some reason just doesn't work for you. Yes, you could be using too much of the Curl Maker or perhaps even distributing it incorrectly for your hair type or density - or maybe you are not using the Moisture Milk with the Curl Maker - if none of these possibilities are the culprit your curls just may be craving something different. A different product! I definitely can't use every product that's been raved about so what I've done in the past is get the miniature versions of products I've been curious about, try them and if they work I get the full size version. Good luck and have lots of fun experimenting!

  19. How do you preserve your hair at night time? Your wash and go is amazing and effortless, love how you embrace your curls as well!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words! This question gets asked a lot and it's a good question since a wash and go is super hard to preserve. I have copied what I suggested to The Picky Gourmet and hopefully you will find it helpful: I hate to a dmi this but, I don't maintain my hair throughout the week(!!) I don't wrap it at night or exercise any type of protective style. I am happy enough with the products I use once a week on my wash and go to allow for the frizz to gradually grow throughout the week until I wash and style it again. I can however, give you the good advice that I myself have decided not to take (lol) - because the products are so good and the method I use gives excellent results, your wash and go will have longevity. Simply wrap it in a satin scarf or bonnet or even do a very loose pineapple on your head every night. I have found that even though I DON'T do this, my style springs back into place the moment I put my wet fingers through it in the morning. Now with a protective measure, I bet the results for maintenance will be even better!

  20. Natalie!!!! Your video is life!!! Thank you for sharing such an informative tutorial...I have used both products before, but never using your technique.

Quick question...how do you maintain your gorgeous locks throughout the week? I have similar hair (but it's shorter) and I struggle to find a maintenance regimen that can keep my curls looking fresh throughout the week. I hate to say this, but I pretty much have to fully wet my hair daily in order to keep my curls fresh the way I like. Please help...and THANK YOU for helping your fellow naturalists.

  22. I just discovered you via curlynikki and you are brilliant! as others have set this video was excellently done! thanks also for answering the questions others have asked about nighttime care, that was my big question too. I'd be thrilled if I could maintain without pineappling (my hair is a little shorter than yours so I usually do 4-5 pineapples). although I'm a 4c I will give this a try. thanks for the beauty and sunshine you bring. I'll be a new blog follower for sure! xo
