The Colors of Fall

This month so far in Southern Cal has been hotter than all of Summer.  I definitely wasn't expecting a daily 100 degrees for the start of Fall when I planned this fitted turtleneck and floor length skirt duo. It's laughable to think of wearing right now.  I know it never really gets that cold here - still, this simple Fall ensemble was planned to be worn for relatively cool mornings on the Vespa, zipping around town to get coffee and a brisk stylish walk in the park.

Perhaps October will be more welcoming of my plans.

These two items (top and skirt) have replaced two older items from my [still] Tiny Closet that have since been donated.  About a year ago, I realized I'm very happy with the quantity (and quality) of clothing and accessories that I own.  I don't need anything more.

Does that mean I will never shop again?
No.  No it certainly doesn't.  Could you imagine?

It means, I've got all the options I need to keep me happy and creative throughout the year.  And when I see something I can't live without, I only purchase it if I can find an item in my closet that I can live without - and I simply replace it with the new.

So even though I love to shop, I also know that it's easy for a fashion lover like myself to be perhaps too indulgent at times.  So this "system" I created for myself keeps me from dealing with a closet full of junk later.

Replacing and not adding makes me enjoy my clothes more...

and helps maintain my focus on the important stuff: being creative with personal style.

turtleneck: American Apparel / skirt: American Apparel / boots: Santee Alley / lip color: Milani "Black Cherry"

Yellow sunsets, brilliant jewel toned flowers, darkened fallen leaves - if only there was a nip in the air, this Fall would be perfect.

As you may be picking up already on my posting trend, with the relaunch of The Tiny Closet, you can look forward to reading and perusing a new post every Monday!  Additionally, I'll be sharing various products I've tried, believe in and love.  So keep your eyes peeled for those special posts as well.

Hope you enjoyed this new Monday post and I'll see ya back here next week for more!

  1. I LOVE this look! You look absolutely flawless. And the lip color is to die for, too! Right after reading this I rushed onto American Apparel to find the skirt you're wearing. Love it!

  3. I completely agree with you, living in a consumer/infotainment society, we often accumulate more than we need. Quality over quantity is always a good things when it comes to most things in life, fashion included. I love AA skirt, I have not been to that store for over 2 years, I will be browsing it for sure.

    1. Thanks for reading, Huda! And definitely check on American Apparel. For a while I paused shopping there but they've really come up with some fun, modern designs for their pieces. I think you'll have fun browsing!

  4. These color combo of everything is altogether lovely! But, darrrrrling, I had my eyes peeled on your manicure as well. They look exquisite and like "mulberry" with ecru half moons. Do tell! :-)

    1. Ahh! Thanks, Shante! I used Revlon's Vixen (#570) for the "mulberry" shade you so accurately described. It's such a deep juicy color, I so love wearing it. The color I used for the moon shape was L'Oreal's "I Like It Chunky". In the bottle, it looks like a golden sandy shimmer but it comes off much lighter in photos. It's quite a beautiful, complex color you have to check out.

  7. I absolutely love that skirt and you make a turtleneck look so fabulous (which is often hard to do ... You even make me want to give them another try and I'd swore them off for life!) I also love your idea of keeping a tiny and relevant closet. I am always thinking about what to get rid of in my closet and reminding myself that it's only clothes. Don't cling too tightly.

  8. Replacing one old with one new is a great method for keeping a wardrobe small and filled with only the best. I'm in the process of gathering tired old clothes to donate and can't wait to start developing a more fresh style. Great post this week.

  10. I'm petite and about 2 decades older than you, but I really admire your style. It's unique to you and I can still steal some ideas. You're a breath of fresh air in the fashion blog world which is filled with the same regurgitated bland styles that only seek to promote blind consumerism for the next "it" item (and their coffers) without a thought for individual style and practicality.

    1. That's a wonderful compliment, Sue - thank you. I am proud to have you as a reader and honored to be a breath of fresh air for you! Thank you for continuing to read, I'm so happy that women older than me (that have much more experience with personal style and fashion) find my perspective valid.
